African strikers to watch out for in the 2010 Fifa world cup in South Africa

I know that we are still in the qualifying stages of the world cup but it would be good to keep track of some important African strikers in the major leagues and watch their build up and the roles they play both in their leagues and the countries they play for.

Lets start with the BBC African player of the year 2008 and the African player of the year 2008 Emmanuel Adebayor. This is one of the most phenomenal players in Africa. He is a Togolese national. He is a strong and dominant figure, very powerful and lethal when it comes to air ball. But I have one problem with him. He needs 50 chances in order to put in one goal. Ok that’s exaggerated but its close. He is not as lethal on the ground. But I am impressed with the way that he is able place the ball round keepers and his celebration dance (together with his Arsenal name sake Emmanuel Eboue) also excites me. I believe he has the will to do more. His shot is not as powerful but he can be a really big disturbance to defences. Ade we are watching you!

Another deadly striker in front of the goal is Didier Drogba, the Ivorian striker. Ok, so the 2008-2009 season has not been his best but for sure he is lethal in front of goal. I believe at full fitness, this guy can tear down defenses single-handedly and ashame defenders. He is big, strong and very fast, a rare combination of a striker. He has a killer shot which I know all goal keepers in the FA premier league dread. Try and stop his shot and either get hurt or deflect it into the goal. This is one of the many African strikers who will be out to perform in the 2010 fifa world cup. He has led Chelsea in goal scoring under Mourinho who termed him as an “Untouchable”. If there is any manager who knew how to use Drogba, it had to be Mourinho. So Drogba, make us proud!

Samuel Etoo is another lethal striker respected the world over. This guy just needs a few touches and the ball is at the back of the net! He does not have a very dominant posture as the above strikers but he is very fast and his shot gives lightning a run for its money!! He has very quick turns and fast releases. On the counter attack, he can leave defenders miles away and when left with the goalie, its an easy job: he can either place it or give a thunderous bolt, whichever he wishes. Even with his short comings in the primera la liga on racism and media reports, his spirit does not deter him from giving his all. Go Etoo

Any other important strikers left out! Feel free and add them to this blog!
